Italy's new car registrations fell for the first time this year, down 15.65% in April to 159,971 units as the effect of last year's car scrapping scheme wore off.

Mr Centro Studi Promotor, a think tank that monitors trends in the Italian car industry said “The incentives party is over.”

Monthly figures for new car registrations had been rising up until April because drivers were still registering purchases made last year. These purchases were left unregistered at the end of 2009 because drivers had made them at the last minute before the December 31 expiration of the car scrappage scheme. The drivers had until March of this year to register the vehicles.

The car scrapping scheme, which benefited sales of small cars, wasn't renewed by the government for 2010.
